Most of Ruth's prints are collagraphs, a print from a collage. They are original, hand-made prints, not reproduction prints.
A variety of materials can be used to make the printing plate including papers, card, fabrics, thread, tin foil, sand, grass, seeds and so on. The materials are glued onto a support such as mountboard. The plates are then sealed with white emulsion paint and acrylic varnish.
To print, ink is rubbed into every part of the plate and the excess wiped away, so that ink remains in the recesses of the plate but is largely removed from the surface. The plate is printed onto dampened printing paper, using an etching press. Textured surfaces such as sand and fabric will create dark tones, while smooth areas will produce light tones.
